The Gruffalo Themed Birthday Party

January 30, 2018 By Kris Leave a Comment

One of the things I like best about planning birthdays for little ones is that I get to pick the theme. Lol. For Fuzz’s second birthday, I picked a Gruffalo-themed party. The Gruffalo is a children’s book by Julia Donaldson. We first discovered it as an animated movie on Netflix. She’s also written The Gruffalo’s Child, Stickman, and Room on the Broom, all of which you can watch on Netflix. But, it gets even better. You can order The Gruffalo in Scots and The Gruffalo’s Wean…her stories written in Scots. When read aloud, you get to try out your best Scottish accent (it’s written phonetically) and brush up on Scottish dialect.

Anyhoo, Fuzz and my other littles have always loved both the book and the movie, so I thought it would be a great surprise for his party.

With the help of my husband, my mom and my sister, we created the characters and placed them in the forest as the backdrop for the food table. It was quite an effort, and there’s no way I could have done it on my own. Fuzz was so excited to see it!

Food was pretty easy, since the book lent some cute ideas (and there are plenty more that you could choose if you wanted!). The Gruffalo in Scots has alternatives for food that also provide potential party grub, like “hot tod stew” or “hoolet in batter.”

Of course, we offered mixed nuts, logs (taquitos), sticks (pretzel sticks), Gruffalo crumbles (oatmeal, blueberry, applesauce muffins that my sister made and they were delish!), and fruits, veggies, and chips. As an added touch, the themed foods were accompanied by short quotes from the book.

For drinks, we served ginger ale, bottled water, and blue punch.

We didn’t do any games at this party; the kids played with each other and that was just fine with them.

My mom made the cake and Fuzz loved the mouse on top! All-in-all, this was such a fun theme to use, but any of the books would be great for a party theme. The characters are unique and memorable and you can pull so many ideas for a party from them.

Leave me a comment and tell me what your favorite element was. 😊
